Hero card stating that only fifteen of seventy-six audited Allentown contractors hold a Google map-pack slot.

Allentown Contractors and the Map Pack

Twenty remodeling companies in Allentown. One of them holds a map-pack slot. The company sitting at the top of that pack has 40 Google reviews, and at least six of the nineteen companies locked out of it have more than that. One has 96. For a kitchen or bath remodel, three slots on a phone screen are most of the inbound calls in this city, and nineteen shops are splitting whatever is left over. Here is what the Allentown map pack actually rewards, based on 76 listings we checked by hand.

What 76 Allentown listings look like

We audited 83 Allentown businesses across eight trades. 76 gave a clean yes or no on whether they hold a map-pack slot for their main service term in the city. Fifteen do.

That is the lowest rate of any town in the region except Palmerton, and it is not because Allentown contractors are worse. It is because there are more of them. Three slots, eighty-three companies, one city. We laid out how the rest of the region compares in the regional landscape post, and Allentown is the hard end of it.

The median Allentown business in our file has 104 reviews. The median company holding a slot ahead of them has 80. Those two numbers should tell you something is going on that is not about reputation.

Your trade is most of your odds

Remodeling is the worst market in the city: 1 of 20. Roofing is next at 1 of 10, then paving at 1 of 8 and tree service at 1 of 5. Plumbing and electrical both sit around a quarter. HVAC is 2 of 7.

Garage doors is the outlier at 4 of 6, and we are not going to pretend six companies is a study. But the pattern matches what we see everywhere in the region: the trades nobody markets are the trades where a correctly built listing still wins.

If you remodel kitchens in Allentown, plan on the map pack being a two-year fight and build the rest of your machine while you wait. If you install garage doors or pave driveways, the pack is genuinely available right now, and the work to get there is a weekend of setup plus a few months of asking customers for reviews.

You are probably not losing on reviews

Forty-three of the Allentown businesses we audited are outside the pack and had a competitor we could count. Twenty-three of them have more reviews than the company beating them.

Allentown businesses locked out of the map pack carry a median 87 reviews while the companies beating them carry 44.

The median company outside the Allentown pack has 87 reviews. The median company holding the slot ahead of it has 44. Half the businesses losing this fight are losing to somebody with roughly half their review file.

An HVAC company in the city carries 531 reviews at 4.8 and ranks fourth in regular organic results for heating and cooling repair in Allentown. It is not in the pack. The business in the number one slot has four reviews. Four. It is a newer shop with a listing that is set up correctly and an address closer to the middle of the search area.

A roofing company in Allentown has 917 reviews at a 4.9. That is the highest count in our entire 402-company file, and it appears in neither the pack nor page-one organic results for roof replacement in its own city. The three companies that do hold those slots have 124, 266 and 147.

So stop buying review-request software if you are already past fifty reviews and still invisible. That is not the leak. Keep asking customers, because reviews do the closing work once someone finds you, but do not expect them to move the map.

Where your address puts you

Google draws the map pack from where the person searching is standing. In Allentown that means the center of the city, roughly the Hamilton Street corridor, decides a lot of it.

Route 22 is the line that catches people out. A shop in Whitehall or Fullerton is eight minutes from center city and still gets left out of Allentown packs. Half a dozen contractors with 18102 and 18103 addresses sit between it and the searcher. The same thing happens from the other direction in Trexlertown and Lower Macungie. You are close enough to work there every day and far enough that the map does not agree.

Three things follow from that, and they are the practical part of this post.

If your address is inside the city, your service area setting should be tight. Contractors here routinely set a fifty-mile radius that reaches into Bucks County and Monroe County. That does not extend your reach. It dilutes what Google understands you to be.

If your address is outside the city but you work in it heavily, the pack is a bad bet and an Allentown page on your website is a good one. Regular organic results are not distance-locked the way the pack is. A real page about the work you do in Allentown, with photos of Allentown jobs and the streets they were on, can rank when your listing cannot.

And if you are on the wrong side of 22 and Allentown is genuinely half your revenue, a second physical location with a real staffed address is the only thing that fixes the pack problem. It is expensive and it is legitimate. A mailbox at a UPS Store is neither, and Google removes those listings when a competitor reports them.

What is actually wrong with Allentown websites

Across the 83 Allentown businesses we logged, the largest bucket by far is structural absence from the pack with no obvious listing defect. Thirty-seven of them. After that: seven running a website template with the builder’s placeholder text still live, six with technical search problems on the site, three with a site nobody has touched in years.

Twelve of the Allentown sites run WordPress, seven run Wix, five are Hibu builds. None of those are wrong by themselves. What is wrong is what gets left in them. Placeholder headings that still say what the template shipped with. Stat blocks that render zeros because nobody filled in the fields. Footer copyright dates three years stale, which is the single fastest way to tell a homeowner you might be out of business.

Here is the check worth running tonight. Open your own site on your phone. Time how long it takes to find your phone number without scrolling. If it is more than two seconds, that is costing you more than your map-pack position is. We walk through the full version of this in our teardown process.

The season you are heading into changes the order

The freeze and thaw cycle that just finished is the reason your April looks the way it does. Roofers in the city are taking flashing and ice-dam calls right now, and those callers are not shopping around. They search once, they call the first pack result, and they book. If you are a roofer outside the pack, the organic result and the phone number on your site are doing all of the work. Fix the site first and the listing second.

Paving is the reverse. The asphalt plants set the calendar, the season opens in a few weeks, and paving is the trade in our Allentown file with the thinnest competition on the internet. One of eight audited paving companies holds a slot, and the median company beating them has 33 reviews. That is a winnable pack inside one season. Listing first, site second.

HVAC sits in the gap. The heating calls are gone and the tune-up calls have not started. That gap is the only stretch of the year when an Allentown HVAC owner has time to fix anything, and it closes in May.

When Allentown is the wrong town to chase

Two situations where we tell people to spend somewhere else.

If you are based in Nazareth, Emmaus or Bath and Allentown is a quarter of your work, chasing the Allentown pack is the most expensive way to grow. You are fighting eighty companies for three slots in a city where you have a geographic disadvantage. Your own town’s pack is winnable, sometimes in a quarter, and the median company holding a Nazareth slot has 55 reviews.

And if you are already booked out past June, none of this is your problem. We have had two Allentown contractors sign up for work they did not need in the last year and we should have talked them out of it. Crew capacity beats visibility every time. Hire, then market.

One limit on our own data. We recorded whether a business holds a pack slot, not how many calls that slot produces. We do not have call volume for these companies, because it is not public. Anybody who tells you an Allentown map-pack position is worth a specific dollar figure per month is guessing.

Do this in the next three weeks

Late March is the quiet gap between the heating season and the AC season, and it is the last cheap window before pre-season tune-up calls start. Fixing your listing in May costs you the season. Fixing it now does not.

Search your main service plus “Allentown” on your phone. Write down the three companies in the pack and their review counts. If any of them has fewer reviews than you do, your problem is setup, not reputation, and more reviews will not fix it.

Then check your service area radius in your Google Business Profile and cut it to what you would actually drive on a Tuesday in February.

What you cannot see from your own phone is how that pack changes across the city. Standing in your own shop, you look your best. Search from 15th and Tilghman, or from the Lehigh Valley Mall, or from Emmaus, and the three names change. That grid is most of the story and it is the part nobody can check for themselves.

Our free Local Visibility Scan runs it for you across Allentown and the surrounding towns and comes back with the three fixes we would make first. No call to sit through, and your details stay with us. If you want the deeper version with competitors, site speed and what your reviews actually say, that is the $399 Strategy Session, which refunds against any project inside 60 days. You keep the report either way.
